DB2-COBOL Developer

The DB2/COBOL Developer is an expert in developing and maintaining applications in an IBM mid-frame environment that supports CPA Global core patent renewals platform. The Developer will design, implement, deploy, and document new application modules and enhancements to existing applications in order to meet business requirements.


We would expect from you to:

  • Contribute to the overall team approach to the software development life cycle in order to meet industry and company standards and support the efficient delivery of high-quality code.
  • Become familiar with the key services supported by IT in order to understand the user experience for these services.
  • Gain a deep understanding of CPA Global’s patent renewals system and how it interacts with other CPA Global systems.
  • Work with the Development Manager and Patent Renewal Service Delivery Manager to prioritize development tasks and plan regular releases.
  • Provide development estimates.
  • Design and deliver new application modules and enhancements to existing applications in accordance with business requirements and company development standards.
  • Work with Testing team to ensure applications are testable in a repeatable and highly automated manner.
  • Produce and maintain application design documentation.
  • Formulate and execute remediation plans where existing applications fall short of industry and company standards.
  • Support Application Administrators in fulfilling complex application management requests.
  • Support the reporting team in fulfilling complex reporting requests.
  • Provide third-level support for help tickets.
  • Provide second-level incident investigation.


Our ideal match has:

  • 3+ years of experience in DB2/COBOL development.
  • Extensive experience programming using SYNON/2E (CA 2E), RPG, RPGILE, COBOL.
  • High level of comfort with SQL concepts and DB2 query syntax.
  • One or more related certifications (CompTIA A+, ITIL Foundation, etc.), strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to model data and communicate design concepts through pseudocode and design diagrams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize competing priorities and meet parallel deadlines.
  • Exceptionally strong organizational and collaboration skills.



  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field from an accredited institution, is preferred.
  • Experience in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience with SQL is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Intellectual Property management.
  • A broad technical understanding of a wide range of platforms and technologies.
